At its grass roots, the true disciples of heavy metal found numerous ways to improve on the sound. Formed on a shoestring and a metal dream, Megaforce Records brought together the terrific speed of Metallica, the haunting grace of Mercyful Fate, and the thunderous anthems of Manowar and Raven. Metallica had improved tremendously since its appearance on Metal Massacre, and the release of the bandıs debut album set a new line in the sand with its relentless rhythmic riffing. Others like Anthrax soon followed, creating a tightly-bound American metal community that supported new talent entirely apart from the mainstream music business.
From SOUND OF THE BEAST:
Above all, [Raven and Metallica in 1983] shared wide-eyed charm. "James made the music, and Lars gave it the push," says John Gallagher of Raven. "We were a couple of years older and had played a lot more. They were just real happy to be out on the road. You could tell Lars was the wheeler-dealer. Lars didn't know one end of a drum set from the other. He needed to change the bottom head on the snare drum, and he didn't know how to take the snares off, so he just cut them off with pliers. It didn't matter."
