In 1983, heavy metal broke loose. Def Leppard's Pyromania ruled the charts, and at the close of the year, Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" became the first metal record to top the pop charts. Heavy metal acts also ruled in the live arena, where elaborate, overblown stage sets delivered on fantastic promises. Throughout their careers, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had focused on touring rather than radio play, but now MTV emerged as an enthusiastic new medium catered perfectly to the outlandish costumes and stage sets of heavy metal. Pioneers prospered, while newcomers like Motley Crue and Twisted Sister racked up multi-platinum sales. It was a new era for young people, and heavy metal was the soundtrack.
