America in the early 1980s was a wasteland. With few exceptions notably California's high-energy Van Halen the United States was more interested in disco dancing than headbanging. Yet things changed, as Ozzy Osbourne resurfaced in a solo band, and AC/DC's multi-platinum Back in Black album inaugurated a heavy metal decade with the toll of "Hell's Bells." Inspired by the British metal samplers of the NWOBHM, Brian Slagel compiled Metal Massacre, a compilation of unknown bands including Ratt, Malice, and Yngwie Malmsteen's Steeler as well as a band that formed for the occasion, Metallica. While the metal scene picked up in Los Angeles, Metallica were shunted away to San Francisco, a less image-conscious environment where they could focus on developing a new kind of heavy metal.
