In the later 1970s, punk rock surfaced and attacked the music establishment on all fronts. Still a marginal new
breed, heavy metal bands like Motorhead emerged that combined the power of Black Sabbath with the dirty immediacy
of punk. Inspired by punk's do-it-yourself ethic, heavy metal fans in England launched bedroom record labels that
supported the first records by Raven, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Diamond Head. In 1981, Kerrang! magazine
debuted, touting the virtues of this "New Wave of British Heavy Metal," and by the end of 1982, Motorhead, Saxon,
Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard and Judas Priest were all venturing abroad to spread their electric new metal to
the world.
